The production process is complex and time consuming. I first need to create
END GRAIN panels (approx. 13″ x 30″ x 1 1/2″ thick) of each species used in the final piece.
From these end grain panels, strips are cut to the widths specified in the
layout. One strip is glued on 2 sides opposite each other using pipe clamps. When dried (45–60 min later), the two glued pieces are trimmed flush to accept the next 2 pieces which
are glued and clamped. This process continues until the layout is fully
assembled matching the layout. The completed glue up is then planed flat
and the finishing process begins. Sanding to 400 grit; wood grain
filled and sanded; several coats of sanding sealer
(lightly sanded between coats); several coats of lacquer (light sanding between coats);
the last layer of lacquer is lightly sanded to dull sheen. Polish is applied and buffed to mirror
finish. A french cleat is attached to back of frame to ensure a secure wall mount.
