Rope is one of those things most of us have around our homes, just in case. It is a basic item that might be exciting to a child learning to rope a calf or use for jumping rope, but otherwise uninteresting. I, however, love rope–the different sizes, textures and weight of it. For the most part I cover it, and it becomes unseen. Occasionally, I love seeing it peek through my fabrics and yarns. It then becomes a visibly important part of my work, as in this piece which is one in a series called “Just Rope”.
Coiling is a technique using fabric and/or yarn to cover rope, rope becoming the core. While covering the rope I continually use the fabric to connect one row to the next. In making the continual connections, the piece becomes firm and acquires the desired shape and design.
